Colon Cleanse

Is colon cleansing a healthy practice? How to cleanse your colon?

I have heard a mixed bag of opinions about colon cleansing - both positive and negative. I am confused. Should I go for colon cleanse? Is it a healthy option or is it bad for health? How do I cleanse my colon in a healthy manner with no side effect?

Are you asking the above question? If you are, then you would want to go through this page to understand the whole picture.

While doing my research on the Internet, the above is what I heard and understood to be the crux of the colon cleansing problem. There appear to be two schools of people - one that believe people should cleanse their colons for a prolonged good health, and the other school of people believe that the practice is harmful for health.

So the obvious question is, what's the right way forward? Should you cleanse your colon or should you not?

Diggging deeper and summarizing what I read and understood, I realized that while talking about "colon cleansing", not everyone are talking about the same thing. So when John talks about colon cleansing being good, Jane does not think about the same colon cleansing process when she says that John is wrong.

In other words, depending upon how they do it, both John and Jane are right. Properly done, colon cleansing is a boon. Improperly done, it is unhealthy.

Great, now that I have got your very first question answered, I am sure you have a new question in your mind - what's a bad colon cleanse process? In other words, what to look out for while trying to cleanse your colon, and how to take precautions? Let me answer that in detail. It comes down to exactly two major points.
  1. Dehydration: Colon cleansing, as a process, may lead to dehydration. As a precaution, stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water and fluids while undergoing colon cleansing to prevent dehydration.
  2. Electrolyte level increases: Some laxatives used in many of the colon cleanse products, such as the ones with sodium phosphate beyond permissible ranges, can potentially cause a rise in amounts of electrolytes inside the body. This is potentially dangerous, and more so if you are already suffering from heart or kidney diseases.
Personally, while not many people advise for it, but I would suggest that you get a list of specific herbal ingredients along with the amounts used in any colon cleansing product that you plan to use, unless you are using something that you trust to be safe. The reason behind the above is that some colon cleanse products use herbal supplements that can potentially be harmful for health.

As far as colon cleanse products are concerned, I would always rate this one and this one to be the two best ones around. There are many others too I am sure, but these are the two that I pick, and I suggest that you pick and choose any one of the two above and stick to it as your long term colon cleanse solution. I've given details of these products on this page for your further reference.
